Uploading files; FTP

You can manage files in your web site using ftp or webdav (note, webdav not available yet). You can use any ftp client program to access files for your website. Some common ftp programs are; CuteFTP, wsFTP for Windows and Fetch, Interarchy for Mac. You can find the latest version of these programs at your favourite download site.

Once you have your ftp program installed and setup, you will need to connect to the Make-Tracks ftp server. You will need your user id and password when connecting via ftp. The connection details for Make-Tracks ftp server are:

Server ftp.make-tracks.com
Path root
Username your Make-Tracks user id
Password your Make-Tracks password

Consult the manual or help files from your ftp program for details on how to upload and download files.

You should have one file in the root directory named either "index.html" or "index.htm" which will be the home page for your site. You can also secure a section of your site by placing files (html & images) in the root/secure directory. You will need to use a custom url to access secure pages on your web site. The secure url will be <https://www.mtsh.com.au/userid/> where 'userid' is your Make-Tracks user id.

SPAM filtering

You can setup your mail program to filter messages identifed as spam. Make-Tracks uses SpamAssassin to identify and mark messages that look like spam. Email processed by Make-Tracks has message headers such as the following added to each message (this is just an example):

X-Spam-Flag: YES
X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.63 (2004-01-11) on mtsh.make-tracks.com
X-Spam-Level: ***********
X-Spam-Status: Yes, hits=11.2 required=5.0 tests=FORGED_AOL_HTML,
	FORGED_AOL_TAGS,FORGED_MUA_AOL_FROM,HEADER_COUNT_CTYPE,
	HTML_MIME_NO_HTML_TAG,MIME_HTML_ONLY,MIME_HTML_ONLY_MULTI,
	MIME_MISSING_BOUNDARY,MISSING_MIMEOLE,MISSING_OUTLOOK_NAME,
	WORK_AT_HOME autolearn=no version=2.63
X-Spam-Report:
	* 0.6 WORK_AT_HOME BODY: Information on how to work at home (1)
	* 0.7 MIME_HTML_ONLY BODY: Message only has text/html MIME parts
	* 1.2 MIME_MISSING_BOUNDARY RAW: MIME section missing boundary
	*  0.2 HEADER_COUNT_CTYPE Multiple Content-Type headers found
	*  0.6 MISSING_MIMEOLE Message has X-MSMail-Priority, but no X-MimeOLE
	* 0.1 FORGED_AOL_TAGS AOL mailers can't send HTML in this format
	* 1.1 HTML_MIME_NO_HTML_TAG HTML-only message, but there is no HTML tag
	* 4.3 FORGED_MUA_AOL_FROM Forged mail pretending to be from AOL (by From)
	*  1.2 FORGED_AOL_HTML AOL can't send HTML message only
	* 1.1 MIME_HTML_ONLY_MULTI Multipart message only has text/html MIME parts
	*  0.1 MISSING_OUTLOOK_NAME Message looks like Outlook, but isn't

The most important header is the X-Spam-Flag. If SpamAssassin thinks the message is spam, the X-Spam-Flag header will have a value of YES, otherwise the X-Spam-Flag header will not be added. The following is an example of the headers that SpamAssassin adds when it thinks the message is NOT spam.

X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.63 (2004-01-11) on mtsh.make-tracks.com
X-Spam-Level: ***
X-Spam-Status: No, hits=3.8 required=5.0 tests=EXTRA_MPART_TYPE,
	FORGED_OUTLOOK_TAGS,HTML_MESSAGE,HTML_TAG_EXISTS_TBODY,
	RCVD_NUMERIC_HELO autolearn=no version=2.63

If you want more control than just a simple yes/no setting, then you can use the 'level' or 'hits' assigned by SpamAssassin. The X-Spam-Level header has one star (*) for each hit identified by SpamAssassin. And the X-Spam-Status header contains the actual hit count. You can use one of those headers instead of X-Spam-Flag to gain finer control of filtering messages based on spam probability.

To have your mail program filter suspected spam messages into a different mailbox, create a filter with the following options:

Match header X-Spam-Flag: YES
Filter action Transfer message to Spam mailbox

All mail programs have different ways of setting up filters, so please consult the documentation for your mail program to determine how to add the above filter action.

IMPORTANT NOTE: There is no way to guarantee whether a message is really spam or not; SpamAssassin can only give an indication of whether a message appears to be spam. You should not filter messages marked as spam directly to the trash unless you don't mind the risk of valid messages being deleted without you seeing them first. You should also periodically review messages moved to your spam mailbox for false positives (messages incorrectly marked as spam), and once you are confident that there are no false positives, then you can delete the contents of your spam mailbox.
